What is Strategic Doing?

Did you know that 70% of traditional strategic plans are never turned into action? More often than not, a traditional strategic plan simply can’t keep up in today’s fast-paced and ever-changing business environment. If you’re heading down the long, slow-moving process of strategic planning, there are a few reasons why the framework you’re working with may no longer be fit-for-purpose.

Firstly, traditional strategic planning is complex and inflexible. It often involves lengthy and rigid processes that struggle to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances. Once the plan is in place, adjusting it in response to unexpected developments can be very difficult and time-consuming. Traditional strategic planning doesn’t foster engagement, or take the whole team on the journey, which leads to a lack of buy-in from stakeholders and less commitment to the plan’s execution. This traditional approach also creates a disconnect between planning and execution - all the ‘thinking’ must be done before the ‘doing’ can begin - which makes it difficult to translate strategies and concepts into tangible actions.

To be truly effective, teams and organisations need a dynamic and collaborative approach to strategy development and implementation that emphasises agility and real-world results. They need a Strategic Doing approach.

Strategic Doing embraces the complexity of today's world by promoting flexible, adaptive strategies that can respond to changing circumstances; and encourages collaboration and active participation from stakeholders across all levels of an organisation and beyond to foster a sense of ownership and accountability. Strategic Doing focuses on the execution, with ‘thinking’ and ‘doing’ working in harmony to ensure that plans are actionable and results-oriented from the outset, and can be adjusted along the way.

Who is Strategic Doing for?

Strategic Doing can enable organisations across sectors to navigate uncertainty, drive innovation and achieve their goals through agile strategy execution. While particularly valuable for businesses looking for a competitive edge in fast-paced and competitive markets, Strategic Doing is effective for a vast range of organisations and can be tailored to unique settings and structures.

Non-profit organisations and communities can utilise Strategic Doing to address complex societal challenges, engage diverse stakeholders and drive meaningful impact. This approach facilitates collaboration between organisations, funders and communities, enabling collective action and transformative change. Similarly, government agencies can benefit from using Strategic Doing to tackle complex public policy issues, support cross-departmental collaboration and deliver effective and efficient public services. Particularly effective in this space is the use of Strategic Doing for community development - an approach that can be beneficial for both nonprofit and government-driven initiatives.

The Strategic Doing approach

Strategic Doing methodology empowers teams, organisations and communities to navigate uncertainty, foster collaboration and execute strategies with agility by following four key Strategic Doing principles:

●      Openess: Encourage open and honest dialogue amongst stakeholders to identify opportunities and challenges and respond quickly to change.

●      Diverse networks: Tap into diverse networks and expertise to generate innovative solutions and approaches, fostering trust and cross-collaboration.

●      Iterative action: Begin with small, manageable projects that can be quickly executed and adjusted as needed.

●      Measure progress: Continuously monitor and measure progress, making data-driven decisions to adapt strategies in real-time, measure impact and inform future actions.
